Nederburg hits sweet spot

Nederburg hits sweet spot

2007-03-15

NEDERBURG‘S reputation for seductive dessert wines, luscious, full and generous but tempered by lively acidity, has just been given another boost.

The 2006 Special Late Harvest was chosen from 40 wines as the best in its class by the Wine of the Month Club judging panel and is being featured during March.

Last year Nederburg’s 2005 Noble Late Harvest won the trophy for best botrytis wine on the 2006 International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) in London, while the 2004 vintage was the only trophy winner in the Tri-Nations Wine Challenge, involving South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

“One of most impressive features of this Special Late Harvest,” says cellarmaster Razvan Macici, “is its residual sugar of 65 g/l, giving it a voluptuous structure and texture, matched by a vibrant acidity.

“The challenge is always to express the honeyed fruit botrytis characters of the wine without their becoming cloying. We think we have succeeded with a wine that is sumptuous, but lively and vivacious.”

He says a high concentration of the grapes, all hand-harvested, were affected by noble rot, concentrating their rich, raisiny qualities.

The Special Late Harvest is a blend of mostly Chenin Blanc (54%), combined with aromatic varietals Gewürztraminer (25 %), Muscat d’ Alexandrie (12%) and Weisser Riesling (9%) to contribute fragrant notes of rose petals and honeysuckle.

It should be served with fruit-based desserts to show its honeyed aromas and flavours of dried apricots and raisins to best effect.
“We are very proud to continue the tradition of our predecessors who established the benchmark for South African dessert wines.”
