AFRICON, a multinational, multidisciplinary engineering consultancy specialising in infrastructure design and management is investing in the youth of Sout Africa by co-sponsoring the UCT Mathematics Conpetition.
Africon’s Regional Manager in the Western Cape, Albert Geldenhuys, presented a cheque for R30 000 to Professor John Webb, co-ordinator of the UCT Mathematics Competition at the UCT campus on 22 February.
“Africon is committed to making a difference to the future of the youth of South Africa. We are proud to be associated with the UCT Mathematics Competition and see it as a vehicle to further develop learners’ skills in Mathematics, thereby creating opportunities for further study and employment, also in the Engineering field,” says Albert Geldenhuys.
The UCT Mathematics Competition is an annual event aimed at identifying promising students in high schools in the Western Cape and further developing their competence in Mathematics.
The competition also raises awareness among students and teachers of the accessibility of Mathematics as a subject that can be enjoyed.
Competition papers are set at three levels: grade 8; grades 9 and 10; and grades 11 and 12. Participation is free of charge to make it accessible for everyone.
“Support given by the Science and Engineering faculties of UCT and Africon is crucial," says Professor Kathy Driver, Dean of Science.
