Time to renew your gun licence

Time to renew your gun licence

2007-03-22

THE D-Day for the renewing of licences of gun owners who celebrate their birthday in April, May and June is approaching.

Police firearm officers are gearing up for the rush they know they are bound to experience during the last week of March, with the final day being 30 March.

Members of the public who do not wish to renew their licences are still able to legally keep their firearms until 30 June 2009, when all the old licences which were issued according to the Weapons and Ammunition Act of 1969 will become obsolete.

By then all unwanted firearms must either be legally discarded or handed in to your nearest police station. Those who fail to renew their licences during the designated time frames will then also lose their licences.

Gun owners whose birthdays fall between July and September have until 31 March 2008 to renew their licences and birthdays between October and December have until 31 March 2009.

More information is available from firearms officers at the police stations.
