Bordeax blends shine
2007-03-22
FOR the second consecutive year, Rustenberg was judged South Africa’s champion Bordeaux Blend cellar. Owner Simon Barlow and assistant winemakers Gareth le Grange and Randolph Christians – on behalf of winemaker Adi Badenhorst – were awarded the Calyon Trophy for best wine, the John X Merriman 2005, at a gala dinner on 14 March in Johannesburg.
Last year, the John X Merriman 2003 was the Trophy winner.
Johan Malan received the gold medal award for his Simonsig Tiara 2005 – the first runner-up, while the silver medal was awarded for second runner-up to Francois van Zyl of Laibach who produced the organically-grown Ladybird 2005.
A panel of experts tasted 81 entries from 56 producers and results were audited by PricewaterhouseCoopers.
The winner receives R10 000 cash from Calyon and an air ticket to facilitate travel to the Bordeaux region – home of some of the world’s most famous red wine estates and the place of origin of the Cabernet-Merlot blend.
The other seven wines making the top ten ranking were (in alphabetical order) Buitenverwachting Christine 2003, Durbanville Hills Caapmans Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot 2003, Elgin Vintners Agama 2005, Glen Carlou Grand Classique 2003; Jordan Cobbler’s Hill 2003, Morgenster 2003 and Raka Quinary 2004.
