Abet classes for Winelands
2005-05-19
THE Cape Winelands District Municipality has entered into a service agreement for the provision of Adult Basic Education (Abet) to its employees.
The service provider, Siyaphambili, will provide Abet to no less than 55 employees in the Roads department of the Municipality. Winelands’ Training and Development Officer, Luthando Nogcinisa, says that there are plans of increasing the number to between 65 and 70 learners as many employees have shown interest.
In terms of the agreement Siyaphambili will, among others, provide advice and direction on the Abet programme implementation and conduct assessments/placements tests.
They will also provide tutors and progress reports, and co-ordinate the enrolment of learners in the Independent Examination Board or Unisa examinations.
This is the first agreement that the Cape Winelands District Municipality signs for the provision of Abet although classes have been going on since March 2004.
The programme is run at the District Municipality’s centres in Paarl, Ceres, Worcester, Stelenbosch and Robertson.
The success of the program in its first year was remarkable. Some of the learners have progressed from being illiterate to being able to write their names and other simple words.
Those who were able to read and write in their mother tongue (IsiXhosa or Afrikaans) were put through a program of English communication and they all proved to be highly competent in Level 1 and this year they will progress to ABET levels 2, 3 and 4.
There are many opportunities that this programme will provide for these workers such as promotion to senior posts within their department and in other departments as well.
