Oral history institute launched
2007-03-29
THE Koinonia Community Centre has initiated an exciting new project, looking at the history of Paarl.
The Reverend Abe Maart Oral History Institute wants to ensure that the rich and diverse history of the valley is not lost to future generations and that the youth gain a better appreciation and understanding of its roots.
A meeting will take place in the Bethel Cong Church in Paarl today at 16:30 to introduce the concept to roleplayers. Members of the public are also welcome to attend.
The Institute will build on the project that Koinonia undertook for the Department of Arts and Culture in 2006 where the history of five icons were captured, focusing on the leaders who contributed unselfishly towards the struggle for freedom and democracy.
The Institute will record the history of people and organisations, using a variety of media to capturing the rich history of the valley with the aim to broadcast these on the community radio.
Young people will be trained to produce quality documentaries for radio.
The Institute will also identify living legends in the community that made contributions to the upliftment of communities through leadership and skills/talent contribution that impacted positively. Recordings will be made of the interviews and these will be archived for future use.
The project will run from March to February next year. For enquiries, contact the project manager, Harlan Cloete on 082-925-5212.
