Circumcision beyond the cut
2007-03-29
WHOEVER is responsible for the production of the documentary on SABC1 TV should hide his head in shame. The programme titled “Shade of the Mountain” was screened on Thursday at 20:30.
Not only was the movie an embarrassment, disrespectful to the Xhosa people and misleading to the public, but it was very explicit for family viewing; this was an unwelcome intrusion into the once sacred and dignified cultural practice.
It was misleading in the sense that it only focused on the cutting and not the teachings, learning, sacrifices and values attached to the practice.
Why should we be exposed to this amateurish and unethical nonsense? To any self-respecting person who is not wooed by extrinsic motivation, sanity should have prevailed.
Although I was happy for the community of Stellenbosch (Kayamandi) for the economic injection that will go a mile, as for the actors - they are a shame and a disgrace to the Xhosa community.
I challenge the producers because as far as I am concerned they are probably not Xhosa speakers. Prove me wrong or hide in shame.
