Shoplifters meet their match

Shoplifters meet their match

CHASING after shoplifters, recovering stolen goods and giving assistance at ATM’s sound like tasks which are performed by the police on a daily basis.

These are however tasks which are voluntarily performed by the ten members of the CBD neighbourhood watch in Paarl. They are reported to be the ‘eyes and the ears’ for the police in the CBD.

Over the past few months this group has ensured that close to 60 criminals have been arrested for crimes ranging from public drunkenness to shoplifting.

Goods worth more than R16 000 which were stolen from various shops in the CBD have also been recovered by this group.

The neighbourhood watch, which has been around for nine months, is committed to ensure that shoppers and businesses in the CBD are kept safe.

* A man whose pistol was stolen from his Paarl home recently, will be charged with negligent loss of a firearm.

The man, who moved from the Eastern Cape to the Zakazwane informal settlement in Dal Josaphat, had already left for work at 06:00 on Tuesday 20 March when his home was broken into.

There is no safe in the home as required by law and the 7.65mm CZ pistol had been left in a trunk.

Information about the theft can be given to the investigating officer, Insp Gavin Lombaard, on 021-877-5240.
