Dumped chicken raises stink

Dumped chicken raises stink

MANNA from heaven, children from Mbekweni thought when they happened upon hundreds of raw chicken braai packs in the veld on Friday.

They took with them as much as they could carry, and rushed home to surprise their mothers with lunch fit for a king.

Little did they know of the potential hazard to their health.

The meat, braai packs past their sell-by date, and others with freeze burn as well as bags with chicken entrails, were dumped at the entrance to the small farmers’ pig-sties at Vlakkeland.

It was the third time that the dumping had taken place, at the request of a pig owner.

But unlike the previous times, the chicken had been left to rot next to the roadside and was not collected by the farmer.

“The pig owner said it was difficult feeding the approximately 1000 pigs housed there,” the manager of the chicken outlet explained.

“We were requested to leave the meat at the entrance to the make-shift sties, from where men with wheelbarrows would then cart the chicken to the pigs.”

When the Paarl Post notified the outlet, the manager was shocked that the chicken had been left in the veld, and promised to investigate immediately.

“We normally mince the chicken into pet food, or take it to the municipal refuse dump from where it is transported to the Vissershok refuse site.

“We only tried to help.”
