Burglar was too slow

A FLEET-FOOTED gardener was able to chase down a burglar who had allegedly robbed a house in Mill Street, Paarl, after a chase of about half a kilometre.
Andreas Gouws was going about his daily chores at 18 Mill Street, when the drama unfolded.
“I suddenly noticed a man race by and was still wondering why he was running so fast, when I heard the calls for help from a neighbour further down in the street.
“I realised what had happened and felt sorry for the woman. I decided to risk my life and chase after the perpetrator.”
And so began a high-speed chase on foot, with Gouws pursuing the suspect from Mill Street, down Gymnasium street and into the Paarl CBD.
“The man was running very fast and I did my best to keep up with him.
“When we reached Main Street many cars had to brake hard to miss us and the traffic then came to a standstill for a while.
“At Edgars I used my last bit of energy and tackled the burglar to the ground.”
A cellphone was found in the man’s possesion, as well as various pieces of jewellery.
“I returned to my work where I received a hero’s welcome and was then told to take the rest of the day off to go and rest,” said Gouws. Elton Heradine (20) was arrested for burglary.
