THE Nondzame Primary School is to move to a new site in Lanquedoc later this year, to make way for redevelopment of the land at its current premises, property of the Boschendal wine estate.
According to Doris May, principal of the school for Xhosa-speaking children in the Groot Drakenstein area, the move of Boschendal farm workers to Lanquedoc has increased the distance which children have to walk to their current school.
Younger children have to wait for older children before walking home, while the teachers often provide transport for the smaller children in grades one and two, who cannot walk the distance to the school.
Anglo American Farms through Boschendal have provided vacant land close to Lanquedoc, near Pniel Primary, for construction of a new school by Public Works in conjunction with the Department of Education.
The new school will be closer to the homes of the Boschendal farm workers.
Prefabricated classrooms are to be put up on the site, where May and her staff of four teachers, one clerk and one caretaker will continue their work.
The soft-spoken woman started Nondzame Primary in 1983, where she worked alone for two months until a second teacher was appointed for the growing school.
The school caters for grades one to seven, after which children attend Paarl schools.
