MBEKWENI writer and director, Thami aka Mbongo, will visit his home town next week with his new play, Things are Bad – “Ijumpile lendaba”.
It will be performed in the Desmond Tutu Secondary School Hall on 19 April at 11:00 and 13:00 and that evening at 19:00 in the Mbekweni Community Hall.
When young people find crime to be a source of entertainment something is wrong. The play examines the terrifying life in the townships where crime is rampant.
“Things are bad – “Ijumpile lendaba” looks beyond gangsterism and explores the connections between criminals, the community, the police and government. By questioning the society in which we live, the play hopes to show how we can all make a difference.
Two of the cast members, Andile Nebulane and Mziwandile Nofemele, are also from Mbekweni. The rest are Mfundo Hashe, Phumzile Mangali, Earl Mentor, Amina Nordien and Asanda Rilityana. The play is dramatised and co-directed by Alison Darcy and Andile Nebulane and produced by Maurice Podbrey for Mopo Cultural Trust. The tour will also visit Khayelitsha, Nyanga, Ocean View, Langa, Macassar and the Bo-Kaap.
