Cosmos go to Castle Cup final

Cosmos go to Castle Cup final

2007-04-12

THE Mbekweni-based soccer club, Cosmos FC, overpowered three teams in the regional play-offs at UCT on Sunday to secure their place in the National Provincial Castle Cup final.

Cosmos became only the second team from Mbekweni, coached by Robert Meyer and Michael Thabang, to reach the final of the national championship.

From the outset it was evident that Cosmos would be a difficult team to beat.

In their first game against Cape Town FC they won comfortably 2-0 and demolished Eden District 5-2 in the next.

The third and final game was played against Overberg District with the Mbekweni boys winning the game by two goals to naught.

Cosmos will represent the Western Cape at the National Championship in Kimberley during May.

* Mbekweni Sundowns’ hopes of survival in the Vodacom League was shattered on Saturday when they lost 2-0 to Black Bafana in Knysna.

This means that Sundowns will be dropped from the Vodacom League as of next year and will then compete in the Boland Castle Cup.

Sundowns will play Black Bafana again this coming Saturday at the Mbekweni sports grounds. The game starts at 15:00.
