MTB Grand Prix a success
2007-04-19
CLOSE to 250 mountain-bike enthusiasts took part in the second Franschhoek Valley MTB Grand Prix on Sunday.
The course took riders on a scenic trip through the Franschhoek countryside where participants were able to choose whether they wanted to race one, two or three laps of 20km each.
Renaldo Bosch and Jaco Drostchie won the 20km and 40km races respectively while Johan Reyneke and Harry Orr, two of the top mountain-bike cyclists in South Africa, battled it out for top honours in the 60km race.
Reyneke and Orr both pushed hard for the victory, but it was Reyneke who outsprinted his competitor at the end of the race to win by the smallest of margins. They finished in just under two hours.
Geddan Ruddock, organiser of the event, said he was pleased with the turnout. “I believe the race could grow into a much larger event as the number of participants are increasing every year.
“Apart from providing all the attractions of Franschhoek, it (the race) also offers serious riders a good training-run for bigger events.”
