R2,5m approved by District Council

THE Executive Mayor of Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) has approved funding of R2,5 million for projects and programmes to alleviate poverty, nurture budding entrepreneurs and develop infrastructure sin informal settlements.
Mayor Clarence Johnson says they made the money available because many of the residents in the CWDM are seasonal workers in the agri-sector who will need employment opportunities during off-season. Johnson says the largest portion of the funds will be used for job creation projects to ensure sustainable employment.
At least R330 000 will be allocated for the Community Support Programme to support NGOs, R200 000 for a Safe House for victims of Domestic Violence, R100 000 for Community Fire Prevention
Programme awareness campaigns and the use of bio-fuels, R100 000 for Community Peace Programmes to build peace and non-racialism, R200 000 for Clean and Green Programmes, R440 000 for infra-structure maintenance in various towns, R150 000 for a Skills Indaba, R100 000 for a number of Local Economic Development Projects, R100 000 for Community Development Support as well as R200 000 for bursaries to address skills shortages.
