THE Department of Labour, through its Labour Inspectors, will embark on a blitz of inspections in the domestic worker sector in Paarl from 14 to 18 March.
The inspections will take place on week days between 08:00 and 20:00 in Denneburg, Klein Parys, Charleston Hill, New Orleans and Wellington.
The purpose of the inspections is to determine whether employers of domestic workers are complying with the law concerning wages, contracts and pay slips.
Inspectors will check: * Whether current wages being paid to domestic workers comply with the minimum wages stipulated in the sectoral determination.
* Whether domestic workers are currently enjoying basic conditions of employment.
* Whether employers are currently discharging the administrative obligations imposed by the sectoral determination. All domestic workers must be paid for every hour or part of an hour they have worked.
For Drakenstein, the hourly wage is R5,25 per hour if a worker works less than 27 ordinary hours per week.
If the worker works more than 27 ordinary hours, the wage is R4,77 per hour.
Labour inspectors will be carrying their inspector’s cards bearing their name and identification number.
Ask to see the inspector’s card before allowing anyone onto you premises.
If in doubt, phone the Department at 862-2604/5.
