Aikido holds first grading

PAARL AIKIDO held its first grading at the dojo in Kloof Street, Paarl, on Saturday.
Fifteen learners, ranging in age from four to fourteen received gradings from entrance Kuy-level 12 to level 10.
The session lasted for almost two hours, with learners having to perform some strenuous exercises and performing intricate Aikido moves.
These Aikido-learners have to progress through all levels up to one before senior grading begins. Normally students progress through a level once a year.
Umar Ebrahim, Sydney Petersen, Yaseen Sulaiman, Jody van Wyk and Joshua Sendin received Kuy 12 grading, Niaaz Ebrahim and Basheer Sulaiman received level 11while Monique and Victor Hankey jnr, Muatham and Rafiqah Ebrahim, Grant Cruywagen, Angelo and Michael Julies and Mia Smith received Kuy level 10 grading.
Appointed Fukushidoin (official permission to examine and issue grades in South Africa) sensei Elroy Goliath who led the grading panel, said: “The grading is extremely important to gauge the children’s progress in Aikido over time, and my experience is that it will leave a memorable impression on them.”
Other panel judges were Black Belts Brent Smith, Sammy and Neville Julies and Victor Hankey Snr (1st Kuy).
