2007-05-03
FORMER Paarlite Dawie van der Walt, currently a golfer for Lamar University (Oklahoma, USA), was unanimously named the Southland Conference player of the year on Thursday.
Van der Walt became the 16th Lamar golfer to win medalist honours at the Southland Championship in the USA. He also became the second straight and sixth all-time Lamar golfer to earn these honours.
Van der Walt posted top ten finishes in all of the seven tournaments this spring and led the Southland Conference with 10 for the season.
His 54-hole score of 13 under 203 was the second-best round since the tournament’s inception in 1964, falling one stroke short of former Lamar golfer John Reigger who posted a 202 in 1985.
Van der Walt leads the Southland Conference with a 70,44 season scoring-average over 34 rounds including a sparkling 69,68 average over 22 rounds this spring. He has shot par or better in 25 of 34 rounds including 15 rounds in the 60s.
Van der Walt was also nominated as semi-finalist for the prestigious Ben Hogan Award. The finalists were announced yesterday and the winner will be named on 21 May.
