Vineyards win in close encounter

Vineyards win in close encounter

2007-05-03

THE first team of Vineyards Rugby Club can consider themselves very lucky to come away with a two-point victory over Young Standards in their Second Division (Western Province) derby match at Faure Street stadium last Friday.

The captain of Vineyards, Thaamir Moerat, said handling errors had cost both teams dearly.

“Standards made better use of their possession,” Moerat explained.

“They played like men possessed, but still couldn’t manage to beat us, even though we probably played our worst game of the season so far.”

At half-time Standards had secured a slight lead of 8-7 and they stayed ahead for most of the second half.

A last minute penalty by fly-half Ricky Carelse tipped the scales in favour of Vineyards, winning the game 13-11.

Standards were unlucky to lose as they were on the attack for most of the game.

Unfortunately they were unable to round off their phases and a poor kicking display by E Davey did not help Standards’cause either.

Anwar Shuhail Moerat (wing) scored Vineyards’ only try while Carelse added eight points with the boot.

Adam Moerat (eighthman) was Vineyards' best player for the third consecutive week.

Hanley Goliath scored Standards’ only try while Davey succeeded with two penalties.

* The second and third teams of Young Standards had more success as they won their respective encounters 21-0 and 10-3.
