Winemakers gear up for awards
2007-05-03
THE annual Winemakers’ Choice Awards are quickly gaining recognition as one of the major wine awards in the South African wine industry.
Due to its unique structure and innovative judging system, it sets itself apart from its competitors.
Currently in its third year, it is the only local wine award that is judged exclusively by winemakers from the various wine regions in South Africa.
Panels of five judges adjudicate each category, and each panel judges the cultivar in which they are most proficient.
The Winemakers’ Choice accolade is considered a valuable benchmark of quality, for both winemakers and consumers, as 25 of the country’s finest winemakers are judging the products of their peers.
Less than 10% of entrants receive an accolade, making the Winemakers’ Choice Diamond Award a prestigious achievement in the industry.
According to awards co-ordinator Robyn Patterson, the diamond-shaped sticker is visually distinctive and places the wines in a class of their own.
“We have received superb feedback from consumers, emphasising the credibility given to wines deemed the Winemakers’ Choice.
"We continue to service our winning producers after the awards, by selling and promoting the award-winning wines, thus generating additional consumer awareness and valuable business for the winning wineries.”
Submission of entries for wines for the 2007 Winemakers’ Choice awards starts on 1 May and closes on 25 August.
The cost per entry is R430 (excluding VAT).
Judging will take place from 10 to 14 September and the winners will be announced at a gala dinner at Nooitgedacht Estate, Stellenbosch, on Wednesday, 19 September.
