R2,5m in grants for entrepreneurs
2007-05-10
THE SAB KickStart programme, funded and developed by South African Breweries Limited, is open to previously disadvantaged youth aged between 18 and 35 who want to start or grow their own businesses.
Since 1995, SAB has invested R38,5 million in grant funding in the programme which promotes business awareness, helps participants develop business skills and provides start-up grants.
After entering the competition, an average of 100 candidates from around the country will be selected to join the programme, where they will attend a 14 days business skills training course.
The participants must then put their creativity and business knowledge to work by preparing a business plan which, if successful, will win them a seed capital grant of between R50 000 and R120 000. After six months of intense mentoring, two businesses are selected from each region to enter the national finals where the top performers will win an additional R700 000 between them, plus mentoring.
Selection is based on the performance of the businesses, the use of the original grant money, the impact KickStart has had on the business, and the sustainability of the businesses.
Most KickStart businesses have developed into viable and successful operations over the last 12years. To enter KickStart, potential entrepreneurs need to complete entry forms available at SAB sites nationally before the competition closes on 1 June.
Those interested in applying can also download entry forms from the SAB KickStart website (www.sabkickstart.co.za) or call SAB on (011) 881 8573 and ask to have their names placed on the database which will allow SAB to post an application form to them.
