O'Connell to honour Rev Abe Maart

2007-05-10

THE Chancellor of the University of the Western Cape, Prof Brian O’Connell, will deliver the first Rev Abe Maart Memorial Lecture in Paarl on Friday 11 May at 18:00. It will take place at the Frank Pietersen Music School in Sanddrift Street.

This is the first annual lecture held in honour of the late Rev Maart, and is organised by Koinonia community centre in partnership with the Abe and Myrtle Maart Foundation.

Maart, who was both an intellectual and pragmatist, died last year on 11 May after a short illness. The purpose of the lecture is to challenge, inspire and to motivate the community.

O’Connell’s theme will be “Leadership and keeping hope alive within the community context”.

The newly elected rector of the University of Stellenbosch, Russel Botman, will also be attending this event as well as other dignitaries.
Rev Maart was a courageous civic activist and consistent champion for the poor who served the community of Paarl for 31 years.

Professor Brian O’Connell, a veteran of the anti-Apartheid struggle, is quite passionate about the notion of digital freedom, and is a champion of putting this concept high on UWC’s research and institutional agenda.

The Reverend Abe Maart Oral History Institute is an initiative of Koinonia supported by the National Heritage Council.
