2007-05-10
LAST week the local soccer team Mbekweni Cosmos, with coaches Robert Meyer and Sango Khaile, was crowned national club champion when the team won the SAB Regional League at the Galeshewe Stadium in Kimberley.
Cosmos started the play-offs with a comfortable 6-1 thrashing over Môrester Jeug FC (Northern Cape), but had a slightly tougher game against Young Stars FC (Eastern Cape) with the game ending in a 2-2 draw.
The following game against Ulundi Stars FC (KwaZulu-Natal) was another tight affair, but Cosmos proved to be too strong and won the match-up 5-3.
As the top team in their group, Cosmos advanced through to the finals where they went head to head with the winners of the other group, Manandze Liverpool FC (Limpopo).
The team from Mbekweni marched straight over their opponents by winning the final 4-1.
Cosmos striker Eric Maxamba finished the competition as the second highest goal scorer with six goals to his name.
This is the second year that a team from Mbekweni has won this title.
Mbekweni Sundowns was crowned national club champ in 2004, also under coach Robert Meyer.
