THE Island of Hope Crisis Centre in Paarl, which provides short term care for victims of abuse and rape, is now operational.
The centre is headed by Major Naomi Malinga, pastor of the Salvation Army in Paarl.
Naomi, originally from Komatipoort, has been involved with the Salvation Army for the past 18 years and has experience running similar centres in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Lesotho and the Eastern Cape.
Naomi loves people and has a passion to help the needy. Running the crisis centre in Paarl with Naomi are the house parents, Lorraine and David Goldman.
Admission to the centre is done only through referral by the Police Social Crime Unit or a social worker.
“We specialise in helping abused children and in special circumstances mothers. We don’t take kids from the street,” says Naomi.
The centre recently accepted its first residents - a mother with her daughter, teenager son and her grandchild, from Mbekweni.
“They have been through a lot of abuse, but are much improved. The family will leave the centre soon, but will come back for counselling.”
The centre, which was financed with the assistance of Paarl Rotary, still requires furniture. Donations to the “white elephant” shop at the centre are also welcome.
Contact Naomi Malinga on 082-408-2409 or drop off the items at the centre, located at the corner of Breda and New Street, Paarl.
