Community can help fight alien plants

Community can help fight alien plants

WHAT can the Paarl community do about the alien plant problem on Paarl Mountain?

There are several aspects to the alien-clearing programme that is currently underway on Paarl Mountain.

Many of the local farmers who have farms on the mountain do much of the alien-clearing work themselves.

The municipal workers also continually work at alien-clearing, the results of which are visible from town, but with the many other duties that they have to perform, progress is relatively slow.

Since large-scale clearing of aliens is very costly and it will take a long time for us to raise funds for such a job, a Paarl Community Alien-Clearing Programme is to be implemented.

Some lightly infested areas (ie areas with young invader plants) have been identified on Paarl Mountain that may be “adopted” by community groups such as school groups, youth groups. church groups and Botanical Society members as areas for regular hacking.

Hacks will take the form of a two-hour session on a Saturday morning, once a month or once every six weeks.

The first hack is scheduled for Saturday 28 May and all are welcome to join in this first, general and notable hack. Once numerous hacking groups are established, a rotational roster will be drawn up.

The group will meet at the Mill Water picnic site in Jan Phillips Drive at 08:00.

For enquiries phone Gael Campbell-Young on 872-8672 or 084-793-2876.
