Nurses honoured on International Nurses' Day

2007-05-17

EACH year International Nurses’ Day is celebrated by marking the significance of the nursing profession.

On Saturday, 12 May, South Africa honoured its nursing practitioners by remembering the significant contributions they make in hospitals every day, often under difficult and challenging circumstances.

As part of the annual International Nurses' Day celebration, Medi-Clinic has awarded Compassion Awards to its nurses at each of the Medi-Clinic hospitals to celebrate the dedication and commitment to quality care portrayed by their nursing staff.

The aim of the Medi-Clinic Compassion Awards is to celebrate those nurses who have been selected by their peers for showing respect to all colleagues and clients, involving their patients’ families and friends, relieving their patients’ fears and at all times providing the necessary information to patients and their families.

At the Paarl Medi-Clinic the Compassion Award was handed to enrolled nurse, Louise Goslett, who has been a nurse for 14 years. She started her career in 1993 as a nurse at 2 Military Hospital and joined Paarl Medi-Clinic on 1 September 1997.

“Goslett was nominated for the Compassion Award for her relentless commitment to her profession, towards her patients and colleagues,” says Oelof Dippenaar, the hospital manager at the Paarl Medi-Clinic.
Estelle Jordaan, Nursing Director of Medi-Clinic, says, “Nursing today is characterised by a number of challenges.

“Despite the challenges however, Medi-Clinic’s nursing practitioners remain committed to clinical excellence, which they demonstrate by sound interpersonal skills, a wealth of knowledge and sound clinical judgement,” she says.
“These abilities create an atmosphere that is conducive to the establishment of client trust and confidence in their care, mutual respect, and the promotion of positive client outcomes,” Estelle says.

Medi-Clinic is committed to the transformation of the nursing profession. The Medi-Clinic group is currently developing strategies to attract more enthusiastic young people to the profession.

The group has also implemented strategies to retain existing nursing practitioners and to draw those practitioners who have ceased practising back into the hospitals.

“We strive to develop our nursing practitioners into effective visionary leaders within the South African healthcare environment,” Estelle concludes.
