Waterfront development
2007-05-24
A RECOMMENDATION that the proposed R650 000 million waterfront development at Market Street be supported, was made at the Drakenstein executive mayoral committee meeting last week.
The motivation behind the development is to establish a base camp for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.
A delegation from the Queensgate Group attended the meeting of the former executive mayor and mayoral committee held in April and made a submission to the committee regarding the proposed development.
Provision will be made for a sports stadium (initially prepared for soccer), a hotel, offices, conference facilities, wellness centre, a gymnasium and boardwalk at an estimated cost of R650 million.
Provision could be made to accomodate the existing sports club facilities.
It is intended to negotiate with Spoortnet regarding a new station abutting the site.
The development will be Fifa compliant and a possible base camp compliance will be considered.
Tenure options according to council’s preference will be considered. The layout is subject to negotiation to accommodate floodlines and other municipal planning requirements.
A request was made that the matter be treated on an urgent basis in order to meet the tight timelines for completion before the Soccer World Cup and that public tenders and proposals be called.
