Boland can now make the right move
2007-05-24
CONGRATULATIONS to Boland rugby for being promoted to the Currie Cup. With the wealth of talent at its disposal and with a solid sponsor, Boland could very well lift the Currie Cup at the end of the season.
I also believe that Boland now has a golden opportunity to appoint a black coach with the departure of the former coach.
Oom Jackie (Boland Rugby President) and his team need to look no further than Pieter de Villiers and Eric Sauls, two seasoned campaigners who are consistently overlooked for higher honours in the game.
But the black coaching pool is wider than the latter two, there are other suitably qualified coaches such as Godfrey Thorne, Peter Maimane, Stanley Raubenheimer, Oerson Gorgonzola, Timmy Goodwin, John Williams, Deon Davids.
If there is one union that can field an “all black” team then it is Boland and they should not apologise.
Roses United, a predominantely black club won the Boland league in 2006, this however did not result in an influx of Roses players into the provincial structure.
If SA Rugby (SARU) is serious about transformation, then they should seize this opportunity to assist Boland and do everything at its disposal to ensure the latter finds the right sponsor and that they contract the quality black players who are consistently overlooked by the provinces' players such as Wayne Julies, Hilton Lobberts, Hyron Thyse, Solly Tybilika, Kabamba Floors, Himangi Shimanga, Chilliboy Ralipele, Heini Adams, Bevan Fortuin.
Boland rugby with the support from SARU have the ideal opportunity to showcase to South Africa once and for all, that black coaches and rugby players have the skills, knowledge and understanding of the game, to play at the highest level.
Boland rugby under the SACOS banner was a formidable rugby force. I believe that possibility once again beckons. All that remains is for oom Jackie and the wise men running the administration at Boland rugby to do the right thing. Harlan CA Cloete
