Johnnie walks off with whisky

THE owner of a liquor store in Paarl’s Main Street is reeling, not only because of a hit-and-run robbery, but because his hot pursuit of the thieves has left him with a torn hamstring.
Angelo Passerini and two assistants were in Tops at Zeederberg Square when two men walked in to buy a six-pack of beer on Friday afternoon.
When they approached the counter, more men entered the shop and walked to the rear.
Angelo became wary when another ten or twelve people - men, women and children - rushed into Tops.
“They were shouting at each other, asking questions of the assistants and generally creating confusion,” Angelo said. “We knew they were up to no good, when suddenly they all walked out.”
The group was searched on the pavement outside the store, but to no avail.
“Then someone pointed out a man hiding behind a bush across the road. I gave chase when he jumped up and ran along Main Street.” The fleeing man tripped over the chain in front of the parking area nearby, and fell with Angelo on his heels. Angelo had to stop so abruptly that he tore his hamstring.
“So that’s what I have for my efforts,” he smiled. “A torn hamstring and a broken bottle of whisky.”
More than R2000’s worth of connoisseur spirits had been stolen that afternoon. And the installation of security cameras which is now on the cards, will up the damages.
Police are investigating the possibility that the same group, allegedly from Mbekweni, has been responsible for similar incidents in Paarl.
