Waste water gets green light
2007-05-31
THE Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning has given authorisation to the Drakenstein Municipality to upgrade the Paarl Wastewater Treatment Works and to construct a new gravity outfall sewer from Paarl South to the Paarl Waste Water Treatment works.
The Drakenstein Heritage Foundation (DHF) has been seeking the appointment of a public inquiry into the decision to allow the water treatment to be built on the slopes of Paarl Mountain, just below the entrance to the Rocks.
“The DHF believes the water works at the proposed site will be unsightly and unacceptable and that more acceptable schemes are available to provide Paarl with the desired, more efficient, water supply,” Len Raymond said.
“We queried the Minister’s decision and requested a motivation, particularly concerning the lack of a permit from Heritage Western Cape.
“This has not been forthcoming.”
This week, however, the Department gave authorisation for the construction of the proposed gravity outfall sewer on the mountain. Appeals against the decision can be lodged with the Provincial Minister, Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning by 20 June.
Appeals must set out all the facts as well as the grounds for appeal and must be accompanied by all relevant documents or certified copies.
A signed and certified copy of the appeal questionnaire (available from the Minister's office at 021-438-3721 or on the department’s website www.capegateway.gov.za/eadp) should accompany any appeal.
