Man held for illegal weapons
2007-05-31
A MAN was arrested in Paarl last weekend for the possession of a large amount of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
This action was taken after the police received anonymous information regarding these weapons which were being kept illegally. Police raided his home on a farm on the Nieuwedrift Road, as well as in Coligny Street.
Five weapons and various calibres of ammunition were seized, which were hidden in cupboards and amongst clothes. Amongst the weapons were a .22 rifle, a 7.65 pistol and a 303 rifle.
An informant said that the suspect had inherited some of the firearms from his father who died more than twenty years ago.
“These weapons have since then still not been licensed.”
A spokesperson for the police said that apart from the fact that the accused will be charged with possession of illegal firearms and ammunition, he will also be charged with negligience, due to the fact that the weapons were not locked away in a prescribed safe.
“The police would like to warn the public that it is a criminal offence to have weapons in your possession which are not legally licensed. “With the new legislation, you have to re-apply for your licence according to your birth date. If you do not wish to do so, the weapons must be handed in at your local police station for destruction.”
