LEARNERS in Drakenstein are much the brighter after Science Week brought the subject into their classes in a fun way.
The Paarl Association of School Governing Bodies held their National Science Week last week, with the Science Department of the University of Stellenbosch participating in programmes for primary as well as secondary schools.
Dr Gillian Arendse of US visited Amstelhof Primary in Paarl East, where he did physics in a fun way with learners of Nederburg, Paulus Joubert, Amstelhof, Imboniselo, Langabuya, Mbekweni Primary schools as well as at Paulus Joubert Senior Secondary.
Thirty learners from Bergendal- and Simondium Primary schools worked with Cecil Wilton in the gardens at Paarl Hospital.
There they learned of the different types of salad grown in the garden and also had a look at the different ways to cultivate crops.
On Wednesday Jeff Adams of Jeff’s Glass demonstrated glass cutting and how to replace a broken window. Paulus Joubert, Amstelhof and LK Zeeman Primary school learners attended.
Dr Natasha Kruger from Stellenbsoch and a colleague from Univercity of Cape Town, Robin Scott, did a presentation on marine biology at the Azhar Moslem Institute, New Orleans Secondary, Charleston Hill Primary and Klein Nederburg Senior Secondary.
“The Science Week is a perfect way to help and encourage learners to cultivate a love for the ever growing importance of maths and science in the school curriculum,” said Denise Ontong of the Paarl Association of School Governing Bodies and co-ordinator of Science Week activities.
“The next step is to help prepare learners for the upcoming Science Expo on 24 and 25 July in the Paarl Town Hall.”
