Rugby seems not to be at the forefront here

Rugby seems not to be at the forefront here

2007-05-31

IN reply to Harlan Cloete’s latest letter dated 24 May 2007, I wish to say that I got the impression the writer was a truly concerned rugby fan. Sadly, as I continued reading, it became clear to me that this was indeed not the case.

There has never been a player with the name Himangi Shimanga. Nor did rugby heroes such as Tybilika or Ralipele ever play provincial rugby. Hanyani Shimange however did. So did Tiybilika and Ralepele.

Sure, there are many players of colour who can play at provincial level, but to urge Boland to pick an “all black” team and discard all their white players is absurd. To then think that winning the Currie Cup is possible shows that rugby is not at the forefront of this gentleman’s mind.

Boland unfortunately is not going to be able to be a serious contender for the honours in 2007. Not with the current circumstances and not in the abovementioned writer’s utopia.

As for Roses United’s success in 2006, it was great to see a team other than the usual suspects win the league, especially after the hard work to make the headlines for the right reasons.

So, sadly, the conclusion I get to from his letter is that he is not concerned about the welfare of rugby in the Boland region, but that he is just being a politician obsessed with race. As so many of them have been of late.
