Wilderer wins triple gold

THE Wilderer’s Distillery, the Boland distiller of world-acclaimed grappa and eaux de vie, has won three gold medals at the 2005 World Spirits Festival in Austria.
These awards follow last year’s double gold and the ongoing accolade of First Class Distillery.
The winning spirits faced competition from all over the world. The gold medals were received for the Grappa Muscato Barrique, the Grappa Pinotage Barrique which also won the award for the best spirit accompaniment to coffee, and the Cape Fynbos Healing Herbs Bitter.
All five spirits entered won medals including winning two silvers for both the Apple Barrique, Calvados Style and the Obstler, made of apple and pear.
Master distiller Helmut Wilderer says that these awards reinforce Wilderer’s reputation as a world class distillery whose products are sought after by connoisseurs around the globe.
“These wins in Austria have put South Africa on the international grappa and eau de vie map. We continue to break new ground,” he says, with products such as the Cape Fynbos Healing Herbs Bitter, a product which revered for its healing properties.
“We have also won high praise for products such as hand-crafted grappa chocolates and an innovative and limited release of French oak matured Premium Grappa Pinotage, a world first which proved to be a collectors’ item.”
Wilderer’s products are on show as a special feature during the two-week South Africa promotion held this month by the famed Galeria Kaufhof throughout Germany.
Wilderer, originally from Germany, settled in South Africa in 1994, opening a distillery and restaurant on the Paarl/Simondium road.
