Killer sentenced
2007-06-07
“I HAVE to resign myself to the fact that my son’s killer got such a light sentence, but I will never be able to forgive him.”
These are the words of a still distraught mother who last week saw the killer of her son sentenced to three years' corrective service, with three years’ imprisonment suspended for five years.
This sentence comes in the wake of the murder of Azhar Knight (21) in October last year.
According to a plea bargain, the seventeen-year-old suspect admitted stabbing Knight in the chest.
In the agreement, the young accused of Mont Rose Avenue, Charleston Hill, said that Knight arrived at his house and started arguing with him.
He was then struck in the face by Knight, after which he went into the house and grabbed a knife which was lying next to a fish-tank. He then went outside again and stabbed Knight, first in the arm and then in the chest.
At the centre of the fight was a sixteen-year-old girl, Bronwyn Wiese, over whose affection the young men battled.
Bronwyn had previously had a relationship with Azhar, but ended it in favour of the young accused.
According to her, Azhar could not accept this and kept tormenting her and the younger man.
Gigi Knight, Azhar’s mother, said this week that to agree to the plea bargain was the most difficult decision she ever had to make.
“I consulted with various advisors about this issue, and even though my heart wanted me to resist, my head made me agree to it.
“This is a light sentence, but he will one day be fairly judged by his Maker and he will have to live with the guilt for the rest of his life.”
The youngster’s sentence permits him to continue attending his classes at a local college as well as go to church. He also has to perform 24 hours of community service each week.
