AN environmental investigation is currently being undertaken on the proposed shopping centre planned for De Kraal, the historic sports grounds in Huguenot.

After years of lying idle, the former municipal land bordered by Jan van Riebeeck Drive, Ambagsvallei Street, Abattoir Street and Van der Merwe Street, is to be developed.

The new owner, De Kraal Shopping Centre (Pty) Ltd, has appointed Doug Jeffrey Environmental Consultants of Klapmuts to complete an environmental investigation on the proposal for the site, Erf 17439.
Their brief was to look into three development alternatives to this project.

The first proposal entails 27 line shops, two anchor shops, 592 parking bays, open spaces and roads, with alternatively a smaller development of 22 line shops, two anchor shops and 578 parking bays.

The third is a no-go alternative, with no development of any kind on the site.

The environmental consultants concluded that “the only environmental concern for this development is that the site is located within the 1:50 year floodline.

“The site is not environmentally sensitive, far from the Berg River and surrounded by urban development.

“With this in mind, as well as the mitigation measure set out in the stormwater management report, it indicates that this does not pose a serious threat to this development,” said Baine Pritchard of Doug Jeffrey. The deadline for comments on the proposed shopping centre is 29 June.
