2007-06-07
ON Friday, International Children’s Day was celebrated at the Dal Josaphat Stadium in Paarl. Approximately 1000 pre-school children from 60 educare centres attended with their teachers and parents.
The day was initiated by Drakenstein Municipality with participation by the Winelands EMDC and the Department of Sports and Recreation.
The morning kicked off with a parade by the toddlers and teachers around the stadium waving their school flags to an appreciative parent audience.
The local Fire Department gave a demonstration on what to do during a fire and the little ones later participated in different ball games.
“The day focused on the role of Early Childhood Development in the development of children, to create an awareness about the rights of children and how communities can take collective responsibility for the safety of children,” said Eunice Maneli of the Community Development section of Drakenstein Municipality.
They hosted and facilitated the programme of awareness and recreation.
International Children’s Day is celebrated throughout the world as a day of awareness of the rights of children and the abuse that children experience.
