Locals do well at SA Canoe Sprints

PADDLING teams of two local schools finished among the top three in the SA Schools Sprint Kayak Championships that was held at Nagle Dam in Pietermaritzburg recently.
A record 320 paddlers from 90 different schools turned out for this the 11th championships.
Organisers were thrilled with the big increase in the number of girls' entries, comprising 50% of the field, and the huge increase in entries from development school clubs, almost double that of 2004.
The event was run over three days starting with the 1000m races. The 500m races and half of the 3000m long distances events were held on the second day of racing with the other half and the 200m races on the final Sunday, in ideal balmy weather conditions.
In the senior co-ed category Bridge House School finished second behind Amanzimtoti High.
In the Junior Co-ed Schools class Bridge House proved unstoppable. They finished with a massive 445 points, 259 points ahead of Lilifontein from East London who were taking part for the second time only. Kingsway from Amanzimtoti were third 28 points further back. In the much smaller Boys' Junior School category HF Verwoerd Boys' Primary headed the points ladder ahead of Paarl Boys' Primary and Louw Geldenhuys Primary.
Local paddlers who finished among the top three were Milly Moss of La Rochelle who teamed up with Bianca Beavitt of Table View High and won the u.16 3000m, 1000m, and 500m K2 events. Moss also won the 200m K1 event and came second in the Victrix Ludorum. Daniel Buys won the 2000m and 1000m K1 events for u.10 boys and came third in the Victor Ludorum race.
In the u.14 class Brian Farley with teammate Julian Atkinson won the 3000m, 1000m and 500m K2 event. He also came first in the 3000m, 1000m, 500m K1 and Victor Ludorum events.
Daniel Pretorius finished first in the 200m K1. All three paddlers are from Bridge House School.
Anja Landman also of Bridge House won the u.10 Victrix Ludorum event, follow by schoolmate Jo-Anne Farley.
Nicholas de Villiers of Paarl Boys' Primary came second in the Victor Ludorum u.12 race, and third in the 200m, 500m and 1000m K1.
