Nation's labour pains
2007-06-14
A BOOK called Labour Pains for the Nation, which also features Paarlite Lizzie Phike, will be launched by the Human Rights Media Centre (HRMC) in Cape Town on Saturday.
The book is a collection of life stories told by eight women workers from service sectors, where women are the majority.
The storytellers are Lizzie Phike, Charlotte Petersen, Florrie de Villiers, Darlina Tyawana, Myrtle Witbooi, Pat van Voore, Rachel Visser and Sarah Claasen who share intimate details of their struggle for justice and equality.
The aim of publishing these stories is to contribute to the preservation of South African labour history and to create awareness of the significant role women have played in opposing Apartheid and oppression.
Their hope is that especially workers will be inspired to protect the hard fought for human rights that they enjoy today and would continue in the paths of these leaders to eradicate poverty and injustice.
For further information, contact Shirley Gunn at 021-761-3303 or Rachel Visser at 021-762-2092.
