Subdivision of farm
2007-06-14
THE Western Cape minister of economic development, Tasneem Essop, has approved the subdivision of part of the farm Groot Parys for development as a gated community. The farm is located next to the Parys cemetery in Paarl.
The section of the farm behind the manorhouse and cellar is to be developed into 26 erven of 1000 to 1374 square metres each. This land has not been used for agriculture for many decades and was previously a piggery.
The land to be developed has separate title from the rest of the farm, and includes the manorhouse and outbuildings. The new development will be surrounded by vineyards and owners will enjoy a wine estate atmosphere.
The erven in the Groot Parys estate will sell from R1,2 million each. The Victorian wine cellar south of the manorhouse is also to be subdivided into six luxury living units, without disturbing the facade.
According to developer Johan Pauw, the farm owners remain shareholders in the company which owns the section which is to be developed.
The proceeds of the development will be used to upgrade the manorhouse (for possible use as a restaurant) and to replant the vineyards to ensure that the farm is viable. No facades on the farm will be changed and permits will be obtained from heritage authorities.
Also included in future plans is possible renovation of the large underground cellar behind the manorhouse for use as a function hall, and development of a gym and sauna in another smaller outbuilding.
* Pauw is also involved in the redevelopment of the Dwars-in-die-Weg complex in Pastorie Avenue. Nearly all 18 of the flats in the Vooruitzicht apartment block, which is currently being redeveloped, have been sold.
* A new development, Oak Tree Villas at the corner of Main and Koning Street in Paarl, is nearly sold out. The development will consist of seven duplex townhouses selling at R1 295 000 each.
