Drama in Paarl, Peoples clash

2005-03-09

THE cricket team of Novel Paarl, the new Boland Super League champions, consolidated their position at the top of the log when they gained eight points in their winning draw against Young People’s at Dal Josaphat last Saturday.

This was the home team’s fourth consecutive unsuccessful attempt to gain the upper hand over their archrivals.

Peoples nevertheless acquired seven points in what turned out to be a very tense match.

Batting first, the Paarl batsmen disappointed for the second week, posting only 210/8 in their 60 overs.

Lee-Roy Walters (52) came to his team’s rescue once again when he joined man of the match Wesley Euley (101) in a 151 run partnership for the fourth wicket, which produced the best cricket of the day.

Walters again showed his class with eight boundaries, while Euley hit four sixes and eight boundaries in his maiden century for Paarl.
Henley Julies (4/52) did the most damage with the ball.

The Young People’s batsmen maintained a steady three runs per over in the first 50 overs, hoping to accelerate at the end to avenge the defeat suffered at the Parys Grounds in November.

With only three wickets in hand, this proved to be too difficult, especially against the experienced Anwell Newman (4/57) and Rohan Goetham (3/40).

Rupert Bailey (44 4x8) and Chester Kuiler (62 4x7) did the business up front, while Edwin Jacobs (40 not out) faced only 46 balls in a courageous but vain attempt to cause an upset against the Boland champs.

Emotions ran high when last man Deon Smith walked in with three runs required off the final three balls, but Newman’s nerve saved the day for the champions, with the home team finishing on 209/9.

At the Parys Grounds, Paarl II (205) were back on the winning trail, easily beating Young People’s II (157) by 48 runs.

Opening batsman Wayne Williams (103) showed that his century against Coronation earlier this season was no fluke, hitting 14 boundaries in a marathon 175 ball innings, which saw him being dismissed only in the last over.

Gershon Gabriels (3/42) shared the spoils with Xavier Alexander (2/32)

Catching the eye for the visitors, were Elrick Jansen and Heinrich Deyssel (42 each), but their team went down against the combined efforts of Morgan Adams (4/28), Denovan Cornelissen (2/4) and Denver van Reenen (2/47).

Paarl III collected the points when Paarl East forfeited the match due to an unprepared pitch.

Saturday the Novel Paarl team play Paarl East at the Parys Grounds, Paarl II play Paarl East II at New Orleans and Paarl III play Young Peoples at the Parys grounds, Paarl IV play Klapmuts in Klapmuts.
