Newton FC pillage Pirates
2007-06-14
ON Sunday Newton United FC escaped with a hard-worked one-goal victory over Paarl Pirates FC at the Boy Louw sportsgrounds.
Both teams squared up evenly in the first half, going into the second with the game still pegged at 0-0.
The visitors’ striker, Charles Daniels, opened the scoring in the 60th minute after some intelligent play by Charles April, Jack Abrahams and the captain, Ricardo Petersen.
Pirates fired straight back with a goal through Ben Hoorniet.
With the game level at 1-1, the strikers from both teams launched shots at goal with little success.
Newton’s David Simmerie managed to find the back of the net ten minutes before the end of the game as a result of great interplay between JP Nyman, Ricardo and Charles Daniels.
Gavin Jacobs almost scored again for Newton, but unfortunately the ball hit the cross-bar, ending the game with a 2-1 victory for Newton.
