LOCAL downhill adventure rider Ricker Castricum (18) has a serious need for speed. With his new bicycle and a healthy dose of adrenaline, there is no mountain high enough for this thrill-seeking youngster. To him, quicker and higher is better.

Ricker, a grade 12 student at Labori High School, recently took part in the national downhill competition where he was selected for the SA Junior Downhill team for the World championship in Scotland later this year - on a track branded as one of the most strenuous in the world which promises to thoroughly test the skill and ability of the riders.

Last year he represented South Africa in New Zealand where he advanced to the finals. Unfortunately his bicycle broke soon after the start of the race, forcing him to finish 18th overall.

“Despite the bad luck, I gained a lot of experience in New Zealand racing against the best riders in the world,” Castricum said.

Last year Ricker won the Western Province championship.

At the nationals he obtined a silver medal in the junior section, finishing 6th overall.
