Cyclists prepare for gruelling race
2007-06-21
THE cold fronts sweeping across South Africa are serving as a timely reminder of the testing conditions that participants will face in South Africa's most arduous mountain-bike race, the 2007 Freedom Challenge Race. The race ends in Paarl on 14 July.
This tough endurance race across South Africa starts in Pietermaritzburg on 18 June where participants will embark on a 2200 km voyage into the Maluti Drakensberg, up the highest pass in the country towards Rhodes, over the Stormberg, across the Karoo, through the Baviaanskloof, along the Swartberg and over the Little Karoo as they follow the Freedom Trail to the finish in Paarl.
Riders will be tested by the long days of cycling, looking to reach Paarl before the race cut-off at noon on 14 July.
The non-stop format of the race, which allows participants to push through the night should they so choose, will result in riders pushing the limits of their physical and mental endurance.
Being unsupported, the resourcefulness of riders will be measured by how they respond to problems that they experience, particularly in the many remote places through which they travel.
