Be energy efficient

Be energy efficient

2007-06-28

IT is winter and South Africans try to curb the cold by using more electricity - especially during peak times.

Through implementing an energy efficiency policy in your home this winter, you can save a substantial amount of money on your electricity account.

Every household in South Africa can save electricity and money through the wise use of energy.

Here are some tips that can be followed:

* Hot water system (geyser): install a geyser blanket; turn down the thermostat to 50-60 degrees Celsius; insulate hot water pipes and use less hot water

* Hot water: take a shower instead of a bath; use the cold instead of the hot tap for small amounts of water and fix leaking taps

* Lighting: use compact fluorescent lights instead of ordinary bulbs; switch lights off when not in use; use low-energy lamps for exterior lighting; do not install multiple lights on a single switch; security lights with movement sensors are cheaper than continuous lighting

* Electric stove: use a pressure cooker when preparing foods that take a long time to cook; buy a stove with a convection oven; keep doors closed until food is cooked; only bring foods to the boil on a ‘high’ setting, then turn the heat down to simmer until cooked; clean stove plate reflectors and make sure that pots and pans completely cover stove plates

* Refrigerator: do not open the door unnecessarily; make sure the seal is intact; turn off the refrigerator when going on holiday; let hot foods cool down before placing them in the refrigerator; defrost your refrigerator regularly; store foods apart on refrigerator shelves.
