Choose Life campaign
2007-06-28
ON 25 and 26 June, the Town Hall hosted the Paarl Police’s Choose Life Project.
The anti-drug campaign, which had been launched in May, was aimed at informing and offering support to children as well as parents who have been affected by drug abuse.
Former drug addicts were present to speak about their harrowing experiences.
Several rehabilitation centres and anti-drug organisations held exhibitions and posters created by Girls’ High and La Rochelle pupils for the event were on display.
The band DNA Strings also attended the event to voice their support for the campaign and to perform some of their music.
Attendance, however, was extremely low despite the fact that numerous schools and churches were informed.
Captain Louise du Plessis, who is in charge of the project, feels that parents in the Paarl West area are in denial regarding the prevalence of drug and alcohol abuse amongst the youth and that if the project were aimed at the Paarl East community the Town Hall would have been full.
According to Captain du Plessis, further plans for the campaign include the establishment of a support group for parents as well as a 24-hour hotline offering information and support.
