A NEW soccer club, Aces United FC, is taking youngsters off the street, away from drugs and putting them on the field playing “footy” while aiding them to pass matric too.
“The guys who make up our two teams have all (in some way or another) been involved with tik, buttons or alcohol,” Aces u.16 coach Christopher Hussein said while the players were eagerly warming up for their debut match against Wellington Secondary u.16.
“The more time they invest in football, the less time they are exposed to negative elements.
“Our aim is to get rid of drugs and crime in Wellington.
"We are also encouraging the players to pass their matric exams through a learnership project.”
Aces held up remarkably well as a unit in their first run against the current log-leaders in the schools’ league.
They managed to fend off several threatening attacks while launching strikes of their own.
Although Wellington scored three quick goals, Aces fought back to narrow the margin.
In the end Wellington was too strong and they won the game 3-2.
* Aces United are in the process of signing up for the Safa Boland Super League where they will continue the fight against drugs and crime.
