DA statements were misleading
2005-05-26
THE Democratic Alliance councillor Gawie Bruwer was quoted in Paarl Post last week that the budget of the Cape Winelands District Municipality was not approved in accordance with the rules of order on 12 May.
This suggestion lacks merit and is an attempt to deflect the public’s attention from the fact that the DA objected to the participation of the community at the council meeting.
I can confirm that the council meeting did quorate. The 45 minute break referred to by Councillor Bruwer was a lunch break which occurs at every council meeting.
I find it extraordinary that councillor Bruwer can comment on the legality of the meeting given the fact the he and every other DA councillor was not present.
The DA never returned to the meeting and never informed the speaker that they were suspending their participation in the meeting.
So much for the DA’s respect of legality and the rules of order. The DA was part of the unanimous decision to approve the draft budget on 23 March. Their non-participation in a council meeting on 12 May amounts to a failure to represent their constituency.
They misrepresent the facts and the interests of citizens.
