Nature reserve ups status
2007-07-05
ELANDSBERG north of Wellington is being proclaimed the first privately owned provincial nature reserve in the Western Cape.
The 606 hectare nature reserve near Voëlvlei Dam protects the endangered West Coast Renosterveld vegetation, the Geometric Tortoise as well as vulnerable species such as the Honey Badger and Cape Mountain Zebra, the Black Rumped Button quail and the endangered White Pelican.
The farm Elandsberg, the property of the Parker family since 1936, was declared a private nature reserve in 1973.
In 1989 the reserve was declared a Natural Heritage Site. Since then farmlands have been taken out of production and added to the reserve as buffer for the Renosterveld.
