Rarities on auction
2005-03-09
THIS year, Nederburg has 26 wines on auction, a fascinating selection that spans more than forty vintages and a variety of winemaking styles, from the classsical to the novel.
They carry the imprint of three successive cellarmasters - Günter Brözel, Newald Marais and the current incumbent Razvan Macici, supported by his colleagues Elunda Basson and Andrea Freeborough.
The rich array amply reflects the breadth of the winery’s range, from the still very lively 1962 Selected Cabernet Sauvignon that bears Brözel’s hallmark of elegance, length of taste and complexity, to single-vineyard wines, blends, Méthode Cap Classique, bubblies, noble late harvest and other varietal wines usually found in blends.
“Everything in the line-up exemplifies Nederburg’s impulse to explore and extend taste boundaries,” says Macici.
“I never fail to be awed by Günter’s wines. The 1962 Selected Cabernet Sauvignon really stands out as a great wine that refuses to be cowed by age.
“It still exhibits wonderful grace and vitality, as does the Auction Cabernet Sauvignon 1975. These are wines built to last and dignify over time, matured slowly in the legendary 5 000-litre oval vats imported from Germany."
